The Voice Clone

Some stories should be told in the throat that wrote them. Read the oath aloud and the house takes an impression of your voice — yours to cast in your own film book or audio book, used for nothing else, and commissioned at three percent of your word count. Taking the impression and hearing it back costs nothing.

Find a quiet room. Read it at your natural pace, aloud, all the way through — roughly a minute is plenty.

I give this voice freely, and I give it whole. It has carried my quarrels and my apologies, my worst mornings and my best nights, and every word I ever wrote was written in it. Let it be taken as it is — the catch in it, the weight of it, the way it slows when the sentence matters. I have read to empty rooms and to rooms that would not settle. I have read to one person who mattered more than the rest. Set my voice into my own story and nowhere else. Speak my chapters in it. Speak my quiet lines in it. And when a stranger hears the first sentence and does not look away, let it be my own throat that held them there.
