The arithmetic, plainly

Take the prize's market value, divide by the number of entrants you expect, and compare that to the fee. A $1,000 prize with 2,000 entrants and a $25 fee is worth 50 cents to you. That is not an investment; that is a donation with a chance attached.

Now the other direction. The Film Book Prize costs $300 to enter and awards a film book build worth $7,200 and up — with the matching audio book edition riding with it. Even against a field of hundreds, the ratio is nothing like a $25 anthology contest.

The Novel-Game Prize: $500 to enter, and the prize is a full novel-game build worth $16,000 and up — the largest thing this house makes. The Citadel Prize: $400 to enter for a Citadel website build worth $9,500 and up. The Audio Book Prize: $200 for an audio book build worth $4,200 and up.

The second test: what losing leaves you

Most contests leave a loser with nothing but a form email. This one cannot, because of the eligibility rule: before an entry counts, an author must walk all 23 free instruments of the Workshop — runtime, pacing, blurb, title, cast, pronunciation, rights, series bible, retail specification and the rest. Those are craft skills and finished documents, and they stay with you whether you win or not.

Judge every contest that way. If the process itself teaches you nothing and produces nothing, the fee is buying only a chance.

Field size is the number nobody publishes

Entrant counts are almost never disclosed, so use the barriers as a proxy. A contest with a low fee and no eligibility requirement will draw thousands. A contest that demands real work before entry will draw a fraction of that, and every entrant in it is serious.

The Seal requirement here is exactly that barrier, and it is why the fees are what they are: $200 to $500 depending on the tier, one winner each, proclaimed September 10, 2027.

When not to pay

Do not pay when the criteria are unpublished, when the winner is drawn rather than judged, when the prize has no stated dollar value, when entering assigns any rights, or when the fee is a meaningful share of what you have. There is a free door at this house precisely so that last case has somewhere to go.
