Can I copyright a book written with AI?
In the United States, copyright protects human authorship. The Copyright Office has registered works that contain AI-generated material where the human contribution is real and identified, while declining protection for the machine-generated portions themselves. In practice: a book you wrote with AI assistance is registrable; a book a model produced is not, and you are asked to disclose substantial AI-generated content when you register.

The human authorship rule
US registration rests on human creative contribution. Selection, arrangement, editing and the writing itself all count. Prompting alone has not been treated as sufficient authorship.
This is US law as it stands, and it is actively being litigated and revised. Other countries differ. For anything with money attached, ask a copyright attorney rather than a website — including this one.
What this means in practice
You wrote the book, a tool helped you tighten it: register normally. Your contribution is the work.
Substantial passages produced by a model and used largely as produced: disclose them on the application. The registration then covers your contribution, not theirs.
AI-generated cover art sits in the same position and is the more common trap — many authors register a book while holding no defensible claim to its cover.
Audio and film editions
A derivative edition — audiobook, film book — carries its own layer of rights: the performance, the direction, the edit, the score licence. Those are separate from the text and should be recorded separately.
