Because when you see that dragon, you know it's strong and solid.

The hearth is cold. Choose how you would like to be received — and the fire, the sound, and the story will rise to meet you.

Either door turns the sound on. Change it whenever you like.

The Long Memory

The house keeps a long memory. Leave an address and you hear of new voices, new instruments and new work before the world does. No course, no call, no salesman.

What is an author platform and how do I build one?

An author platform is the set of readers you can reach without asking anyone's permission — your email list, your own site, and the audience that follows you rather than an algorithm. Followers on a platform you do not own are borrowed reach; the platform is what remains when a feed changes its rules overnight.

The Herald's Calendar

Free: lay out a posting and sending rhythm you can actually keep, around your release date.

What counts, in order of value

Your email list. Owned, portable, and the only channel that reaches everyone who asked for it.

Your own site. Permanent, indexable, and the door every other channel points at.

Social followings. Real reach, real value, entirely borrowed. Treat them as a road to the first two, not a destination.

The smallest version that works

One page with your name on it. One sign-up offer worth having — a first chapter, a short story, a narrated scene. One thing you send regularly enough that people remember agreeing to it.

That is a platform. Everything after this is scale.

What to give away at the door

Give something that demonstrates the experience of your book rather than describing it. A narrated first chapter outperforms a PDF sample almost everywhere, because it is rarer and it travels.

This is the quiet advantage of holding an audio edition: your sign-up offer is already made.

Consistency beats size

A list of 400 people who open your letters is worth more than 40,000 followers who scroll past you. Write to them like a person, not a campaign, and never make every letter a sale.

Asked and answered

Do I need a platform before I publish?
It helps enormously, but it is never too late. Most enduring platforms were built after the first book, not before it.
How big does a platform need to be?
Big enough that a launch is not silent. A few hundred engaged readers changes the shape of a release week.
