Which passages travel

Passages that carry a whole feeling in under fifty words. A threat, a confession, a rule of your world stated flatly, a line of dialogue that would make a stranger turn their head.

Avoid exposition, avoid anything that needs a name explained, and avoid your prologue's opening paragraph — it is almost always scene-setting, which is the least portable thing you wrote.

A working test: read the passage aloud to someone who has not read the book. If you have to explain anything first, it is not a vertical piece.

The craft rules

That is the whole argument for producing once and cutting many times. Marketing here is sold as effort and reach, never as sales or rankings, and the reach comes from having something worth cutting.
