How do I choose an audiobook production company?
Judge a production house on six things: whether the price is published, who owns the master, who directs the narration, how casting is priced, what mastering and delivery are included, and how revisions are handled. Any house that will not answer all six in writing is not a house.

The six questions
Is the price published, or must you ask? A published rule means the number is the same for everyone.
Who owns the finished master and the rights? The answer should be: you.
Is narration directed, or simply read and delivered?
How is casting priced? Here it is arithmetic — 1% of the word count per 2 voices.
Are editing, mastering and storefront-ready delivery included, or billed later?
What happens if a chapter must be re-recorded, and who pays?
Marketplaces versus houses
A marketplace connects you to a freelancer and steps back. You are the producer, the proofer and the project manager.
A house takes responsibility for the finished file. That is what you are buying when you pay more than a per-hour rate.
What this house publishes
7.000000000000001% of word count for an audio book, 12% for a film book, 1% per 2 voices, 1% per 5 effects, $1,500 for a chosen, cut and mixed score.
A 50% deposit begins the build; a withdrawn Charter returns 50% of monies paid, work done or not.
Every rule the house works by is posted at the Rites, in plain words, before you pay anything.
Asked and answered
- Should I use a royalty-share deal?
- Royalty share trades cash now for a share of future income and usually the master's terms. Read what you give up before you sign.
- How do I compare quotes fairly?
- Convert every quote to the same basis: your word count, with editing, mastering and delivery included.
- Do you promise sales or reviews?
- No. This house sells effort and reach, never rankings, reviews or results.
- Can I hear the voices first?
- Yes — the Reading Room holds listen-only registers, free, before any Charter is sealed.
